Aim | To consider music as a part of culture. To get knowledge about the evolution of music and the relationship between people and music. To study technical features, history and culture of European music and Turkish Maqam music in the geographical region, which is from Central Asia to Balkans and Europe, by comparing with historical documents. |
Course Content | This course contains; 1. Music culture in Turkish-Islam Nations. Founder of “Sistemci Okul” Safiyüddin Urmevi and Abdülkadir Meragi.,2. Social and cultural life of Ottomans in XVth century and their relationship with music. Music understanding in the time of Murat II. Manuscripts on music theory, theoreticians and composers.,3. Social and cultural life of Ottomans in XVIth century and their relationship with music. Music understanding in the time of Beyazıt II. Manuscripts on music theory, theoreticians and composers.,4. Social and cultural life of Ottomans in XVIth century and their relationship with music. Review on works of Hafız Post, Itri, Tab’i Mustafa Efendi, Solakzade and Şerif depending on their scale, rhythm and lyric specifications.,5. Analysis of Ali Ufki’s Mecmua-i Saz-ı Söz in cases of makam, usul and form of instrumental and vocal pieces.,6. Understanding of composition in Tulip Era. Compositors in this era. Exanimate the musicians from Atrabü’l Asar.,7. Kantemiroğlu Yazması: Theory and notation chapters. Analyses Makam, usul and form. MIDTERM,8. Echole of Selim III. New makam-s and usul-s. Analysis on makam.,9. Westernization and modernization influences on Ottoman social cultural life and music Establishment and evaluation of Muzıka-yı Humayun as an educational institution.,10. Staff notation. Publication of staff notation. Traditional education system of music: Meşk. Education system depending on staff notation,11. Musicologists of the republican period and their studies. Mahmud Ragıp Gazimihal, Halil Bedii Yönetken, Rauf Yekta, Hüseyin Saadetin Arel, Abdülkadir Töre, Ekrem Karadeniz, Kemal İlerici.,12.
