AimThis course is a comprehensive survey of the foreign policies of the Turkish state with a historical background of the Ottoman Empire. The basic principles and priorities of the Turkish Foreign Policy, Turkey’s geo-political and geo-strategic characteristics in the international politics; the influential actors within the Turkish diplomatic history; the basic structure of the Turkish Foreign Policy decision-making; and Turkey’s search for an foreign policy during the Cold War and pre-Cold War periods are among the topics of the course. Issues that will be discussed include: Turkish foreign policy during the establishment years, the formation of Turkey’s foreign policy during the Cold War, Turkey-US relations, Turkey- the USSR/Russia relations, Turkey’s relations with the MENA countries and the Cyprus question; the nature of decision making in Turkish foreign policy. The course is one of the basic courses of the department and therefore it will be designed as lecture-oriented. One of the targets of the course is that the course will provide detailed knowledge to the IR students and thus they will be able to analyze the current policies.
