Designing the Future Through Quality Assurance
High-quality design education is built on cultivating a culture of quality that transforms creativity into sustainable achievement through a systematic educational approach. One of the strongest indicators of such a culture is independent accreditation. The Industrial Design Department at Istanbul Medipol University has been accredited by the Industrial Design Accreditation Board (ENTAK), the national accreditation body for industrial design education in Türkiye. This accreditation confirms that every aspect of our programme—from educational objectives and learning outcomes to academic staff, physical and technical infrastructure, assessment practices, and continuous improvement mechanisms—has been independently evaluated in accordance with nationally recognised quality standards. For us, accreditation is not an endpoint but an institutional commitment to continuous enhancement. Our curriculum is regularly reviewed and refined through systematic feedback from students, graduates, industry representatives, and academic stakeholders, ensuring that it evolves in response to advances in technology, manufacturing practices, and societal needs.
Integrating Creativity with Production Competence
Industrial design is the discipline of transforming creative ideas into feasible, manufacturable, and socially valuable solutions. Contemporary designers are expected not only to generate innovative concepts but also to visualise them rapidly, translate them into digital environments, develop functional prototypes, and effectively manage production processes. Our educational philosophy integrates creativity with technical competence, design thinking with manufacturing culture, and research-driven inquiry with intensive project-based learning. Throughout each semester, students complete three design projects addressing diverse design challenges. This intensive studio structure enables them to develop systematic design processes, strengthen their ability to work under realistic time constraints, and cultivate the professional discipline expected in contemporary design practice. At least one of these projects is carried out in collaboration with industry partners, public institutions, or external technical experts. Through these collaborations, students engage with authentic design problems, manufacturing constraints, and real-world industry expectations while still pursuing their undergraduate education. Our objective is to educate designers who not only generate strong ideas but are also capable of delivering them with the speed, quality, and professionalism demanded by industry.
A Learning-by-Making Educational Model
Our programme is built upon the principles of interdisciplinarity, curriculum integration, practice-based learning, material experimentation, digital manufacturing technologies, intellectual property awareness, industry collaboration, and entrepreneurship.From their first year, students receive comprehensive training in three-dimensional modelling and computer-aided design, enabling them to transform ideas into digital concepts efficiently. They also benefit from the Faculty's advanced prototyping facilities, including additive manufacturing technologies and digital fabrication equipment, throughout their education. In our department, design is not learned solely through drawing; it is developed through an iterative process of modelling, prototyping, testing, and refinement.
Another distinctive strength of our programme is its extensive portfolio of elective courses. With nearly thirty electives offered regularly each academic year, students can explore diverse fields ranging from automotive and jewellery design to ceramics, glass, food, yacht, and boat design. This flexibility enables our students to graduate with a strong foundation in industrial design while developing expertise aligned with their individual interests and career aspirations.The interdisciplinary nature of our programme further enriches this educational experience. Industrial Design students collaborate with peers and academics from Architecture, Interior Architecture and Environmental Design, Urban Design and Landscape Architecture, as well as disciplines such as Occupational Therapy, Nursing, Dentistry, and Gastronomy. This collaborative environment encourages students to approach design challenges from multiple perspectives and equips them with the ability to develop innovative solutions informed by diverse areas of expertise.
From Design to Intellectual Property
At our department, we aim for student projects to extend beyond the boundaries of the classroom. Our goal is to cultivate design solutions that are not only creative and technically feasible but also possess novelty, commercial potential, and the capacity to address real-world challenges. Accordingly, students are encouraged to consider intellectual property as an integral part of the design process rather than as an outcome of it.This educational approach is supported by Istanbul Medipol University's strong innovation and technology transfer ecosystem. The University has demonstrated its institutional strength in intellectual property through its outstanding performance in the Intellectual Property Pool category of TÜBİTAK's Entrepreneurial and Innovative University Index. Within this ecosystem, student projects are evaluated in collaboration with the Technology Transfer Office (TTO) to assess their patentability, utility model potential, industrial design registration opportunities, and broader commercialization prospects. As a result, students gain first-hand experience with intellectual property management, technology transfer, and innovation processes during their undergraduate education.The outcomes of this approach continue to grow each year. In 2025 alone, student projects led to 24 patent applications and 65 intellectual property registrations, including patents, international patents, utility models, and industrial design registrations. Between 2017 and June 2026, our department has contributed to more than 300 intellectual property registrations. These achievements reflect our commitment to an educational model in which design is viewed not only as a creative endeavour but also as a process of generating, protecting, managing, and ultimately creating value through innovation.
