The future perspective of the ‘New Syria’ discussed under the leadership of MEDAR
The current situation and future of Syria were discussed at a roundtable meeting organized by the Mediterranean Research Center (MEDAR) and the Office of the Ombudsman for Anti-Discrimination and Equality. It was emphasized that increasing unemployment and infrastructure problems negatively affect returns, and that international cooperation is essential for sustainable reconstruction.

A roundtable titled “New Syria in Its First Month: Current Situation and Future Perspectives” was held in cooperation with the Istanbul Medipol University Mediterranean Research Center (MEDAR) and the Office of the Ombudsman for Anti-Discrimination and Equality. The meeting, which took place on the North Campus, was attended by MEDAR Board Members, representatives of the Office of the Ombudsman for Anti-Discrimination and Equality, officials from public institutions and organizations, and participants from civil society organizations.
INCREASING UNEMPLOYMENT NEGATIVELY IMPACTS RETURNS
The meeting addressed the events in Syria from a broad perspective. Many important issues were discussed, from security to education, from cultural heritage to the economy, from social peace to human rights. The meeting emphasized that the increasing unemployment rate and infrastructure problems in Syria are the main factors negatively affecting the return processes. Participants noted the need for a comprehensive reconstruction process to ensure that returns are sustainable within a human rights framework. It was stated that the security situation directly affects people’s right to life, and that international cooperation is essential to address this issue. The need to develop policies in the areas of education, cultural heritage, and human rights was also emphasized. In a statement by MEDAR officials at the end of the meeting, it was announced that a comprehensive report will be prepared in the coming days.
