Assoc. Prof. Gezmen: “Dead Internet Theory” is an exaggerated but real threat
Assoc. Prof. Başak Gezmen from the School of Communication made statements to Anadolu Agency about the “Dead Internet Theory”.

Assoc. Prof. Başak Gezmen, Head of the Department of New Media and Communication Systems at Istanbul Medipol University’s School of Communication, made statements to the Anadolu Agency Teyit Hattı. Commenting on this concept, which is based on the theory that the vast majority of online traffic, shares, and users are created by robot accounts and artificial intelligence, Assoc. Prof. Gezmen said: “This theory can also be evaluated as a dystopian conspiracy theory, claiming that human-generated content will be replaced by artificial intelligence-generated content over time.” Assoc. Prof. Gezmen emphasized that although the ‘Dead Internet Theory’ is considered an exaggerated approach, it carries too many risks in terms of becoming reality. Emphasizing that content producers are marketing users to advertisers on social media platforms, Assoc. Prof. Gezmen explained that this theory only reflects a certain part of the truth and that it would not be correct to say that the organic flow of content has completely disappeared. Underlining the effects of artificial intelligence and the problems that arise, Assoc. Prof. said that content produced by algorithms destroys organic interaction based on high interaction and keywords. She stated that they are faced with the question of “Which content is produced by artificial intelligence and which content is produced by humans?” and said that content is becoming ordinary, uniform content is increasing, and creative and quality content is gradually decreasing.
