Medipol alumnus Hamamcı receives prestigious Google PhD Fellowship
İbrahim Ethem Hamamcı, a dual-degree graduate of Istanbul Medipol University’s Computer Engineering Department and International School of Medicine, has been awarded the “Google PhD Fellowship 2025”, one of the world’s most prestigious research grants. Hamamcı is currently pursuing his doctoral studies at ETH Zurich.

The “PhD Fellowship” program, awarded annually by Google to doctoral students conducting innovative research in the fields of technology and science, is supporting a total of 255 researchers in 12 different research areas across 35 countries this year. İbrahim Ethem Hamamcı was among those recognized with an award in this year's “Health Research” category.
Hamamcı, who is pursuing his doctoral studies at ETH Zurich, also works as a research assistant. Conducting his research in collaboration with the University Hospital Zurich and the Artificial Intelligence Center at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich, Hamamcı specializes in machine learning and medical image processing. Hamamcı's doctoral advisor is Prof. Dr. Bjoern Menze, known for his pioneering work in the field of medical artificial intelligence.
Beyond financial support, the fellowship provides recipients with mentorship from Google researchers and opportunities for collaboration within a global scientific network. According to Google’s official announcement, the program has so far supported over 950 researchers from 227 institutions across 44 countries, with the goal of advancing progress in fundamental science.
Hamamcı's work aims to contribute to the early diagnosis of diseases using artificial intelligence-supported image processing techniques. In this respect, the research has the potential to increase diagnostic accuracy and clinical efficiency in the field of health.
Hamamcı, who achieved international success as a graduate of Istanbul Medipol University, summarized the importance of the award in his academic journey, stating, “The interdisciplinary perspective I gained during my undergraduate years guides the research I conduct today.”
