Neuroscientist Dr. Sena Yıldırım, who is continuing her studies on chemogenetic tools with the Research Institute for Health Sciences and Technologies (SABITA) Director Assoc. Prof. Emrah Eroğlu at SABITA, has been awarded the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO) Scientific Exchange Grant. Dr. Yıldırım will be supported for her project titled “Deciphering Hippocampal Oxidative Stress: A Chemogenetic and cOFM Approach”.

Dr. Yıldırım will conduct her research at Joanneum Research in Graz, Austria, combining chemogenetic manipulation techniques with cerebrospinal fluid microdialysis (cOFM). This innovative approach will map the dynamics of oxidative stress in the hippocampus with high temporal and regional resolution, and the data obtained will shed light on the mechanisms of Alzheimer’s and other neurodegenerative diseases. The international program, of which Dr. Yıldırım is a beneficiary, provides support for both travel and living expenses during laboratory exchanges lasting up to three months. The program also aims to offer original methods and infrastructure.

IT WILL BE A FIRST IN TÜRKİYE
As part of the grant, Dr. Yıldırım will bring the cOFM platform to Türkiye and lead its establishment within the Research Institute for Health Sciences and Technologies (SABITA). This will be the first time in Türkiye that this advanced method for long-term molecular monitoring in the living brain will be available to local researchers.

SABITA Director Assoc. Prof. Emrah Eroğlu congratulated Dr. Yıldırım on her success and said: “Sena’s success is not only a personal milestone, but also a strategic contribution to the infrastructure of our institute. The program is critical in terms of technology transfer. With the cOFM technology, we are taking an important step towards achieving world standards in neurovascular research. The grant provided will not only accelerate the career of a young researcher, but will also add a high value technology to the neuroscience research capacity of Türkiye and strengthen international collaborations.”
