Can the “Twin transformation” drive development?

15.10.2025

The “Digital and Sustainable Future Summit” held at Istanbul Medipol University brought to the agenda a new development vision shaped by the intersection of digitalization and sustainability. At the summit, the concept of “twin transformation,” which integrates technological progress with environmental responsibility, took center stage.

Digitalization and sustainability present a new paradigm that defines the dual transformation of today’s economies. This transformation not only encompasses technological advancement but also redefines social responsibility. Global competitiveness is now shaped by the balance between efficiency and technologies that reduce the carbon footprint. The holistic approach known as “twin transformation” builds the development model of the future by aligning digital innovation with environmental, economic, and social sustainability goals.

With this vision, Istanbul Medipol University’s Center for Sustainable Development Practice and Research (SURKAM) and the Association for a Digital and Sustainable Future (DİSÜDER) brought together academia, industry, and entrepreneurship at the “Digital and Sustainable Future Summit.” Held at the South Campus Conference Hall, the summit featured two sessions titled “Digital Transformation” and “Sustainable Future,” opening a discussion on how technology intersects with the social responsibility of the future.

TECHNOLOGY ALONE IS NOT ENOUGH
In his opening speech, DİSÜDER Chairman of the Board Dr. Âdem Kayar drew attention to the concept of “twin transformation.”
“Digitalization and sustainability are jointly shaping the economic and environmental balances of the future. Digitalization, artificial intelligence, and automation are now transforming not only production processes but also the way we think. However, technology alone does not create a sustainable future.” said Kayar, emphasizing that technological innovation must be integrated with environmentally friendly and socially conscious production models.

According to Kayar, “twin transformation” is not merely an extension of Industry 4.0 but a vision of restructuring that places the human being at its core. This perspective positions digitalization not solely as a means of increasing efficiency but as a process grounded in social benefit and environmental responsibility.

Kayar reinforced his observation with the following words:
“The environmental impact of software is as important as the energy efficiency of a factory. Digitalization should not distance us from humanity; it should restore value to society.”

Projects such as DİSÜDER’s “Digital Organized Industrial Zone Meetings” and “Twin Transformation Workshops” carried out across Türkiye, aim to bring this vision into practice by building an interactive bridge between universities, industry, and young people.
