A multidisciplinary approach to obesity treatment: Medication, diet and lifestyle must be managed together

15.04.2026

At the symposium titled “Innovations in Obesity Treatment and What Should Be Known About Injectable Medications Used in Weight Loss Therapy” held at Istanbul Medipol University, next-generation injectable medications used in obesity treatment were comprehensively examined. Experts emphasized that while these medications provide significant benefits, they are not sufficient on their own, underscoring that sustainable weight loss requires the integration of dietitian support, lifestyle modification, and regular physician follow-up.

At the symposium organized by the International School of Medicine at Istanbul Medipol University, current treatment approaches to obesity were addressed from a multidimensional perspective. The program, held at the South Campus Conference Hall, comprehensively evaluated a wide range of topics, including the biological foundations of obesity, lifestyle modification, the mechanisms of action and side effects of injectable medications, nutritional therapy, and the necessity of a multidisciplinary approach. Among the speakers were Prof. Abdülkadir Ömer, Dean of the International School of Medicine at Istanbul Medipol University, and Assist. Prof. Neda Saleki from the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics at the School of Health Sciences.

During the program, it was emphasized that obesity is a serious health condition not limited to weight gain alone, but one that is associated with numerous diseases ranging from diabetes and cardiovascular conditions to fatty liver disease and sleep apnea. The opportunities offered by injectable therapies, which have become increasingly widespread in recent years, were discussed in detail, including the patient groups for whom these medications are suitable, key considerations in the treatment process, and the critical importance of dietitian support.
