A drop flows silently, the future drains away: Water waste was made visible

27.03.2026

Installations set up across the campuses of Istanbul Medipol University rendered often-overlooked water waste visible through tangible data. Demonstrating that a continuously dripping tap throughout the day can result in a loss of up to 10 tons annually, the project compellingly underscored the reality that “a minor neglect can lead to a major crisis.”

Within the scope of the “Let Not It Vanish Drop by Drop” project, implemented by the Environmental and Energy Management Office of Istanbul Medipol University, specially designed installations across the campuses visually illustrated the scale of water waste. The event, carried out with the participation of students and staff, aimed to foster a collective awareness regarding water conservation.

Implemented as part of the university’s “Water Efficiency Mobilization,” the project sought to demonstrate, through concrete examples, how small and often unnoticed daily water losses can lead to significant long-term consequences. In this context, transparent water tanks were placed at various points across the North and South Campuses. The slogan inscribed on the tanks “Water Dripping Drop by Drop Is Our Future Being Wasted” drew attention to the long-term implications of water waste.

Thanks to the slow-drip mechanism installed at the top of the tanks, the amount of water accumulated throughout the day became directly observable. In this way, participants were able to witness through a visual and tangible experience how even a single drop can transform into a substantial loss over time. By the end of the day, the volume of water collected in the tanks revealed the magnitude of water waste, emerging as one of the most striking aspects of the event.

A SMALL DROP, TONS OF WATER LOST ANNUALLY
According to data shared during the event by Ali Şenbahçe, Head of the Environmental and Energy Management Office, a dripping tap leads to an approximate loss of 20–30 liters of water per day. Over the course of a year, this corresponds to a loss of 7–10 tons of water. Emphasizing that such losses often go unnoticed yet accumulate into significant waste over time, Şenbahçe noted that these losses can be prevented through simple measures. He particularly highlighted the necessity of repairing leaking taps and stressed that reducing unnecessary water use and modifying daily habits can result in substantial savings.

PARTICIPATORY AWARENESS AT THE CORE
The project extended beyond a purely visual awareness initiative and placed participant engagement at its center. Through boards placed next to the tanks titled “My Pledge for Water Conservation,” students and university staff shared their suggestions and awareness messages regarding the conscious use of water. The notes written by participants reinforced the message that water conservation is an individual responsibility.

SAVINGS BEGIN WITH DAILY HABITS
Ali Şenbahçe, Head of the Environmental and Energy Management Office, stated that the protection of water resources can be achieved not only through institutional policies but also through individual awareness and the transformation of daily habits, adding that awareness-raising efforts regarding water efficiency will continue in the coming period. Emphasizing that water conservation is made possible not primarily through large-scale projects but through small measures initiated in everyday life, Şenbahçe noted that the principal objective of this initiative carried out on campus is to render water waste visible and to cultivate a lasting consciousness.
