The common message at the “Not as You Know It” Summit: The path to truth lies through critical thinking

At the “Not as You Know It” Summit, organized by the Disinformation Combat Club of Istanbul Medipol University with the support of the Directorate of Communications of the Presidency of the Republic of Türkiye, disinformation and fact-checking processes among the most pressing challenges of the digital age were discussed. Speakers emphasized that misinformation affects not only individual thought but also collective memory, democratic processes, and global relations, underscoring that the path to truth lies through critical thinking.

The “Not as You Know It” Summit, organized by the Disinformation Combat Club of Istanbul Medipol University with the support of the Directorate of Communications of the Presidency of the Republic of Türkiye, was held at the Conference Hall of Istanbul Medipol University’s South Campus.

The Summit, which aimed to raise awareness in the fight against disinformation, was attended by Prof. Recep Öztürk, Vice President of Istanbul Medipol University; Dr. Ümmühan Yücel, Communications Specialist at the Center for Combating Disinformation under the Directorate of Communications of the Presidency; Ömer Faruk Görçin, Manager of Anadolu Agency’s Fact-Checking Line; Journalist and Author Dr. Murat Özer; Ezgisu Kordalı, President of the Disinformation Combat Club; as well as numerous academics and students.

During the event, the speakers highlighted the importance of media literacy, critical thinking, and a culture of verification in combating the rapid spread of misinformation in the digital age. Throughout the program, the social impact of disinformation, the influential power of algorithms over individuals, information-related challenges arising from artificial intelligence, and the role of young people in addressing these issues were examined from multiple perspectives.
