A New Approach to History Education
The Department of History at Istanbul Medipol University addresses history not merely as a discipline narrating past events, but as a dynamic mode of thinking that connects knowledge with the present and shapes the future. Our goal is to provide our students with the competence to read and analyze historical sources in their original languages, evaluate different periods comparably, and conduct historical analysis at both micro and macro levels.
History education at our university will be conducted through an interdisciplinary approach. With the contributions of expert academicians in the social, economic, and political sciences, as well as philosophy, literature, and the arts, students are expected to acquire the skill to evaluate historical phenomena from diverse perspectives, establishing meaningful connections between the past, present, and future.
Furthermore, students are encouraged to participate in double major and minor programs to enrich their academic development. The engagement established with different disciplines throughout this process enables students not only to gain intellectual flexibility but also to develop contemporary skills such as digital literacy, data-driven thinking, and AI-based historical analysis. Consequently, our graduates achieve a strong position in both academic and professional spheres.
100% English Education and International Experience
The language of instruction in our department is 100% English. Students who achieve advanced proficiency in academic English during the preparatory class complete their academic education in History through courses conducted entirely in English. Every student will have the opportunity to attend courses at elite universities in the United Kingdom or the United States as part of the summer school programs supported by Medipol University. Tuition fees and accommodation expenses for overseas programs are covered by our university.
Arabic Language Education
Knowledge of the Arabic language is of great importance for accessing Ottoman and Islamic historical sources. Students will receive Arabic language courses from faculty experts over three years (six semesters). Students who successfully complete this program will consolidate their language skills by attending an intensive language course in Arabic-speaking countries (such as Jordan, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia). All expenses for this process will likewise be covered by our university.
Ottoman Turkish and Source Reading Competence
Ottoman Turkish, an indispensable tool for Ottoman history research, is a core component of the department's curriculum. Within two years, students will reach a level enabling them to read both printed works and manuscripts. Additionally, in advanced courses, they will begin drafting original research papers based on primary Ottoman sources.
Education Amid the Historical Layers of Istanbul
Leveraging the advantage of being situated in Istanbul—a city that has played host to numerous civilizations from the Roman Empire to the present—the Department of History at Medipol University utilizes this city's rich historical background as an educational environment. Through field trips to archives, libraries, museums, and historical sites organized in connection with course topics, students directly touch history and become active participants in the learning process.
Double Major and Minor Opportunities
The Department of History at Istanbul Medipol University offers students the opportunity to expand their academic interests and acquire a versatile intellectual foundation. In line with this, successful students can benefit from the Double Major and Minor programs provided by the university.
History students enjoy a broad range of options for double majoring, particularly with programs rooted in equal-weighted score disciplines. Double majors can be pursued in departments such as Law, Political Science and Public Administration (Turkish and English), Psychology (Turkish and English), International Relations, and Business Administration, as well as programs within the Faculty of Communication including Journalism, Public Relations and Advertising (Turkish and English), Media and Visual Arts, New Media and Communication, and Radio, Television and Cinema (contingent upon student exam scores, academic standing, and quota availability). Furthermore, pursuing a double major with relevant departments in the Faculty of Fine Arts, Design, and Architecture is also possible (subject to student exam scores, academic standing, and quotas).
All of these programs are equally eligible for minor studies. Additionally, minors may be pursued in fields selected from different faculties, such as the Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences and the Faculty of Health Sciences (depending on exam scores, academic standing, and quotas). Thus, students can build a robust interdisciplinary academic profile by combining historical expertise with other social sciences, communication, or technical fields.
Career Opportunities
The Department of History at Istanbul Medipol University aims to cultivate well-equipped individuals who do not settle for merely understanding the past, but who are prepared to shape the future. This approach opens up a broad spectrum of post-graduation career opportunities.
Graduates in history can pursue an academic career, taking up roles as faculty members or researchers at universities and research institutes. The source reading, analysis, and interpretation skills acquired throughout their undergraduate education render them competent in areas such as historiography, archival studies, document analysis, and academic publishing.
History education is not limited strictly to academia. Our graduates can take on active roles in creative and communication-oriented sectors, including cultural heritage management, museology, publishing, media, and documentary production. They can find career opportunities in specialized domains such as editing, script consultancy, and historical advisory, or serve as content creators, researchers, or consultants in the television, radio, and digital publishing realms.
As a result of their interdisciplinary education, history graduates are also qualified to contribute to the rapidly evolving fields of data literacy and digital humanities. Creating datasets, content analysis, AI-based historical modeling, and algorithmic archival searches represent next-generation career paths that leverage historians' specialized competencies.
Thanks to the Double Major and Minor opportunities provided by the Medipol Department of History, our students can specialize in second fields such as law, psychology, communication, political science, or fine arts. Consequently, our graduates gain the versatility to work across diverse sectors ranging from public administration, legal, and diplomatic services to non-governmental organizations, think tanks, and media enterprises.
Supportive and Selective Academic Environment

These scholarships are structured to cover not only tuition fees but living expenses as well. Comprehensive support—including housing, books, and research allowances—is provided so students can focus entirely on their academic advancement.
Medipol History goes beyond providing historical facts; through a multifaceted educational vision, it strives to raise individuals who are critical thinkers, culturally conscious, proficient in the digital domain, and intellectually courageous. Our objective is to prepare a cadre of highly talented students equipped with these qualities as tomorrow's influential historians and global contributors.
Faculty and One-on-One Interaction
Our students work in direct, one-on-one interaction with academics who do not merely transmit knowledge, but actively think, question, and produce.
