Department of Pharmaceutical Botany

The Department of Pharmaceutical Botany, one of the core departments of pharmacy, is the branch of science that studies medicinal plants, drugs derived from these plants, and their preparations. Pharmaceutical Botany is a multidisciplinary field closely related to areas such as pharmacognosy, botany, anatomy, physiology, ecology, biochemistry, pharmacology, and ethnomedicine. The Department offers a Pharmaceutical Botany course to pharmacy students for one semester.
The research areas of the Department of Pharmaceutical Botany at the Faculty of Pharmacy, Istanbul Medipol University include
- Nomenclature, classification, and identification of medicinal plants
- Determination of the biological activities of plants
- Recording traditional medicinal uses of plants through ethnobotanical studies and evaluating the efficacy of ethnobotanically used plants using scientific methods
- Systematic, morphological, anatomical, molecular, and chemical studies of medicinal and toxic plants
