Department of Pharmacognosy
Pharmacognosy, one of the fundamental disciplines of the pharmacy curriculum, is the branch of science that studies medicinal substances derived from plants and other natural sources. It is a multidisciplinary field closely related to areas such as botany, biochemistry, pharmacology, and ethnomedicine. The Department of Pharmacognosy offers Pharmacognosy courses to pharmacy students over three semesters and a Phytotherapeutics course for one semester.
The research areas of the Department of Pharmacognosy at the Faculty of Pharmacy, Istanbul Medipol University include:
- Isolation of compounds with anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial activity through activity-guided fractionation
- Isolation and structural elucidation of secondary metabolites from plants, particularly terpenoid and phenolic compounds
