A legal perspective on the risks of the digital age

20.05.2026

At the “Science Law Talks” event held at Istanbul Medipol University, participants discussed how the law, striving to keep pace with technological advancement, should position itself around the principles of human dignity, privacy, and justice. Addressing topics ranging from artificial intelligence and deepfake technologies to social media liability and crypto-assets, the event emphasized that information technology law is no longer a field of the future for young legal professionals but rather one of the essential disciplines of the present day.

Bilim Hukuku Söyleşileri

Organized by the Information Technology Law Application and Research Center of Istanbul Medipol University in collaboration with the School of Law, the “Science Law Talks” approached information technology law not merely as a theoretical field of discussion but through the concrete legal consequences emerging from digital life. Held at the South Campus, the event brought together students with Assoc. Prof. Şerafettin Ekici, Chair of the Department of Information and Technology Law at Istanbul Medeniyet University.

The programme addressed a wide range of topics, including the evolution of the internet, the legal responsibilities arising from social media posts, electronic signatures, the protection of personal data, artificial intelligence, deepfake technology, crypto-assets, and digital rights. Throughout the event, technology was examined not only as a tool that facilitates everyday life but also as a powerful force of transformation that continuously redefines the boundaries of law.

Participants were encouraged to recognize that, in the face of digital transformation, young legal professionals should not remain merely users of technology but should instead become actors who assume legal, ethical, and social responsibility within an increasingly digital society.
