Istanbul Medipol University’s live broadcast program Radio Campus continues to feature beloved figures from the radio industry. This week’s broadcast was hosted by Serdar Gökalp, a well-known radio host from Alem FM. The guest on the program was Op. Dr. Serdar Marol, an Ophthalmologist from Bağcılar Medipol Mega University Hospital. The broadcast, which can also be watched live on Istanbul Medipol University’s YouTube channel, addressed both the effects of screen exposure on eye health and seasonal eye disorders. Dr. Gökalp said he enjoyed the broadcast immensely and was happy to be at Medipol.

DR. MAROL: THERE IS A MYOPIA EPIDEMIC IN THE WORLD
In the program, Dr. Marol, who first drew attention to the effect of screen use on children, emphasized that the digital habits brought about by the age harm eye health and said: “There is currently a myopia pandemic in the world. It is felt very intensely especially in the Far East, but it is now clearly seen in Türkiye as well. It is normal for children between the ages of 8 and 12 to develop myopia, but the rates are increasing exponentially.” He stated that children not spending time outside and focusing on screens accelerates myopia formation and increases its prevalence. Dr. Marol warned: “Children need to spend time outside, play in the street, and focus on long distances. It is important to avoid unnecessary screen exposure.” Stating that adults spending long periods of time in front of the screen also negatively affects eye health, Dr. Marol defined this situation as “digital dryness”. He added that eye health is negatively affected when people do not blink for long periods of time while looking at a screen and recommended looking at a distant point every 20 minutes, increasing the number of blinks and using artificial tear drops.
