Highlights of Medipol in 2023

Istanbul Medipol University left behind a year full of successes, awards, and inventions. We have compiled the prominent developments of 2023 in our traditional almanac.

For Istanbul Medipol University, 2023 was recorded as a year full of success. Our university, as in 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, and 2022, became the address of YKS winners and those who ranked in 2023. The International School of Medicine stood out as the “faculty with the highest base score” among all faculties in Türkiye. Medipol was also among the most preferred universities with its high occupancy rate.

Istanbul Medipol University, which continues its quality accreditation studies consistently, increased the number of current accredited undergraduate programs to 30 as of September 2023. Reaching a total of 41.03% of accredited undergraduate programs, Medipol ranked third among the foundation universities in Türkiye with the highest number of accredited undergraduate programs, and ranked 10th when all higher education institutions are considered.

Türkiye was shaken by 7.7 and 7.6 magnitude earthquakes on February 6, affecting 11 provinces centered in Kahramanmaraş, which was described as the “disaster of the century”. Like the whole of Türkiye, Istanbul Medipol University took action and started an aid campaign. Medipol, which provided in-kind and cash aid to the region, also took close care of its students affected by the earthquake.

MEDIIPOL ONCE AGAIN AMONG THE WORLD'S BEST
Medipol has been included in the lists of the world’s best universities announced by the world’s most respected higher education rating organizations this year. In 2023, Medipol ranked high in many lists, such as Times Higher Education (THE), QS World University Rankings, URAP University Rankings, University Ranking by Academic Performance (URAP), Scimago, Round University Ranking (RUR), Webometrics, and U-Multirank.

AWARDS MADE US PROUD IN 2023
Istanbul Medipol University was very proud of the awards its academic staff and students received in different fields and the projects they developed in 2023. Dean of the School of Engineering and Natural Sciences Prof. Hüseyin Arslan received the 100th Anniversary TÜBİTAK Science Award. Faculty member Assoc. Prof. Özge Şensoy received this year's TÜBA-GEBİP award for her studies on “Computational Physics and Structural Biology” in the field of “Natural Sciences”. The School of Medicine lecturer Prof. Bahar Güntekin was elected as an Associate Member of the Turkish Academy of Sciences (TÜBA). In the same year, Güntekin was awarded the ‘Roy John Award’ by the EEG and Clinical Neuroscience Society (ECNS), which studies the electrophysiology of the brain. Güntekin became the first female researcher in the world to achieve this success. Emine Hazan Akçadoğan, one of the 2020 graduates of the School of Dentistry, also came first in Türkiye in the 2023 DUS 2nd semester. The School of Dentistry lecturer Assoc. Prof. Gülsüm Sayın Özel and our doctoral student Büşra Nur Çimen returned with an award from the 26th International Congress of the Turkish Prosthodontics and Implantology Association. Faculty member of the School of Engineering and Natural Sciences Dr. Elif Hocaoğlu won the first prize at the award ceremony held within the scope of MÜSİAD VISIONER’23 summit. The School of Medicine research assistant Dr. İsmail Türkten received the “Turkish Society of Anatomy and Clinical Anatomy Prof. Atilla Müftüoğlu Young Researcher Award”. The Faculty of Business and Management Sciences lecturer Prof. Hasan Dinçer received the 2022 Outstanding Editor Award of Financial Innovation (SSCI-Q1) magazine.

JANUARY
Medipol selected as a ‘Nutrition Friendly’ institution
Istanbul Medipol University President Prof. Ömer Ceran attended the introductory meeting of ‘TEKNOFEST 2021’, of which we are an academic stakeholder.


FEBRUARY
Our student Özel is the world's first in packaging design

Zeynep Özel, a student from the Department of Industrial Design at the School of Fine Arts Design and Architecture, came first in the world with her project titled ‘Sensodyne Mixed’ in the ‘WorldStar Global Packaging Student’ competition.

MARCH
Significant success from Medipol students in TÜBİTAK 2209 A/B

33 of the 44 applications submitted by Istanbul Medipol University students to the TÜBİTAK 2209 A/B programs were entitled to receive support.


APRIL
Three departments of the School of Communication were accredited by İLEDAK

The Departments of Media and Visual Arts, Radio, Television, and Cinema, and Public Relations and Advertising of the School of Communication were accredited by İLEDAK (Communication Education Evaluation Accreditation Board).

MAY
Istanbul Medipol University became a member of UNAI

Istanbul Medipol University was accepted as a member of “United Nations Academic Impact (UNAI)”.

JUNE
Our academics are on the ‘Best Scientists’ list

Prof. Hüseyin Arslan, Prof. Bahar Güntekin, and Prof. Jean J.M.C.H. de la Rosette was included in the “Top Scientists” list published by Research.com.TEMMUZ

JULY
Our students experienced the joy of graduation

‘2022-2023 Graduation Ceremony’ was held. Approximately 12 thousand students experienced the joy of graduation by receiving their diplomas during the ceremonies that continued for a week.


AUGUST
Medipol was entitled to receive ISO 27001 Certificate

Istanbul Medipol University certified its competence in information security by receiving the ‘ISO 27001 Information Security Management System Certificate’.

SEPTEMBER
Our architecture program was accredited

Our Architecture program in Turkish, affiliated with the School of Fine Arts, Design and Architecture, was accredited by the Architectural Accreditation Board of the Architectural Education Accreditation Association (MİAK-MAK).

OCTOBER
İlber Ortaylı talked about 100 years of the Republic

Prof. İlber Ortaylı met with Istanbul Medipol University students in the conversation titled “100 Years of the Republic”. Ortaylı shared his views on language, culture, and sociology from the Ottoman Empire to today.

NOVEMBER
24 November Teacher’s Day was celebrated

An event was organized by Istanbul Medipol University School of Education to celebrate 24 November Teacher’s Day.

DECEMBER
Artificial intelligence and human met in Medipol

‘Artificial Intelligence in Visual Communication and Design Summit’ was organized by Istanbul Medipol University School of Communication. At the summit, the computer, which designs and produces visuals with artificial intelligence, competed with designer Selman Kıran.
