GÜLAY: JUSTICE BEGINS WITH COMPASSION
In his opening remarks, Former Chief Prosecutor Hikmet Gülay emphasized the concepts of compassion and trust that lie at the foundation of law. He noted that the only way to practice a profession with genuine commitment is to love it, stating:
“Justice is humanity’s struggle to remain human. It begins with compassion, grows with integrity, and is protected by courage.”
Gülay also stated that, despite the pressures and challenges he faced throughout his career, he never compromised on justice, emphasizing that once a legal professional bends under pressure, it becomes impossible to stand upright again. He further shared examples from prison work programs aimed at educating inmates and reintegrating them into society, underscoring that even the best rules can lead to just outcomes only when they are implemented by conscientious individuals.
