The Vice-President of the Constitutional Court Bağcı: The constitutional judiciary is the cornerstone of a democratic state of law

A symposium titled “Constitutional Judiciary as the Guarantee of Democracy and the Rule of Law” was organized in collaboration with Istanbul Medipol University School of Law and the Research Center for Constitutional Justice (AYAM). The event, which took place in the South Campus Conference Hall, was attended by many academics, lawyers, and students, including the Vice-President of the Constitutional Court Basri Bağcı, Istanbul Medipol University President Prof. Ömer Ceran, Istanbul Medipol University School of Law Dean Prof. Ayşe Nuhoğlu, and Istanbul Medipol University School of Law Faculty Member Prof. Ahmet Ulvi Türkbağ.

BAĞCI: HUMAN RIGHTS LAW SHOULD PROTECT THE VALUE OF HUMAN BEINGS
Speaking at the program, the Vice-President of the Constitutional Court Basri Bağcı said that the constitutional judiciary is the cornerstone of a democratic state governed by the rule of law. Bağcı said: “A state governed by the rule of law is an order that protects human rights and freedoms and provides justice, and the constitutional court ensures the continuity of this order. The Turkish Constitutional Court was established with the 1961 Constitution and adopted an understanding parallel to Western democracies. It has ensured democratic functioning and constitutional guarantees of fundamental rights with its decisions. Our court has two main functions: norm review and individual application. While norm review ensures the constitutionality of laws, individual application is a guarantee gate to protect the rights of citizens.”
