SURKAM drew attention to sustainability at the ‘Future on Our Plate Summit’
At the “Future on Our Plate: Social and Cultural Dimensions of Sustainability Summit” hosted by Istanbul Medipol University, issues such as preventing food waste, supporting local producers, and producing while preserving the ecological balance were discussed.

At the “Future on Our Plate: Social and Cultural Dimensions of Sustainability Summit” organized by Istanbul Medipol University Sustainable Development Application and Research Center (SURKAM) in collaboration with the School of Fine Arts, Design, and Architecture, food sustainability and social awareness issues were discussed. The event, which took place at the South Campus Conference Hall, was attended by Istanbul Medipol University Vice-President Prof. Recep Öztürk, Istanbul Medipol University Fine Arts, Design, and Architecture Dean Prof. Hüseyin Atilla Dikbaş, SURKAM Deputy Director Assoc. Prof. Öznur Gülen Ertosun, Istanbul Medipol University Department of Gastronomy and Culinary Arts Lecturer Onur Semen Öner, Waste-Free Kitchen Chef Özge Şahin, Muutto Founding Partner & Chef Umut Karakuş, Author Reha Tartıcı, Effect Burson CEO Gonca Karakaş, JW Marriott Istanbul Bosphorus Executive Chef Şafak Erten, Telezzüz Executive Chef Bahtiyar Büyükduman, and Tanışık Consulting Company Founder and President Ayşe Ayşin Turan were the guests. The guests made evaluations on topics, such as preventing food waste, supporting local producers, and producing while preserving the ecological balance.
PROF. ÖZTÜRK: URGENT MEASURES SHOULD BE TAKEN FOR FOOD SUSTAINABILITY
Delivering the opening speech of the event, Istanbul Medipol University Vice-President Prof. Recep Öztürk emphasized that food sustainability is one of the most critical issues of our time and said: “If we want to leave a livable world to future generations, we need to take urgent measures regarding food sustainability. This summit is not only an academic event, but also a great opportunity to raise public awareness and create solutions. As Istanbul Medipol University, we act with a sense of social responsibility in addition to producing science. Preventing food waste, supporting local producers, and encouraging healthy eating habits are among the fundamental elements of our education and research policies.”
