At the meeting organized by the Istanbul Medipol University Health Systems and Policies Application and Research Center (SASPAM), Prof. Dr. Osman Hayran, faculty member of the Department of Public Health at the School of Medicine, shared with participants the importance of coordination in the health sector and examples of its implementation at different levels.

THE FUNDAMENTAL DIMENSIONS OF COORDINATION IN THE HEALTH SYSTEM
At the event held on the South Campus, Prof. Dr. Hayran compared the concepts of coordination, cooperation, collaboration, and integration, emphasizing that coordination is a fundamental requirement for an effective health system. While discussing these concepts, he underlined that coordination plays a central role in the efficiency and sustainability of the system, stating, “Coordination is the backbone of the health system.”

Explaining that coordination means “harmonization,” cooperation means “working together,” and collaboration means “joint production,” Hayran said:

“To prevent repetitions, conflicts, and inefficiencies in the health sector, tasks, resources, and individuals must be organized in a harmonious way. This forms the backbone of health at both the clinical and administrative levels.”

Stating that a successful health system requires coordination not only within institutions but also between them, Hayran continued:

“In order to ensure that all health services across the country are delivered efficiently and with quality to improve public health, nationwide service integration must be achieved through the coordination of the Ministry of Health. For this purpose, collaboration among sectors and cooperation both within and between organizations must be established.”
