Medipol takes a step toward health biotechnology cooperation in Riyadh
Prof. Mustafa Güzel, a faculty member at Istanbul Medipol University School of Pharmacy, was among the Turkish scientists invited to the Global Medical Biotechnology Congress held in Riyadh. Güzel held meetings with leading representatives from the fields of health, science, and technology and, on behalf of Istanbul Medipol University, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) covering cooperation in health biotechnology.
Following the Mecca Agreement signed by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, the Global Medical Biotechnology Congress was held in Riyadh from September 14 to 16. The congress brought together scientists and industry representatives from different countries. Prof. Mustafa Güzel, a faculty member at Istanbul Medipol University School of Pharmacy who also serves at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), was part of the scientific delegation representing Türkiye. Güzel attended the congress upon the invitation of Dr. Khaled Albar, CEO and Chairman of KS Pharma, and Dr. Essam Hanashalshahaby, CSO of Kayan Sahala.
PROF. GÜZEL HOLDS HIGH-LEVEL MEETINGS
Throughout the three-day congress, Prof. Güzel met with senior representatives involved in shaping Saudi Arabia’s health policies and scientific initiatives. The discussions addressed the development and production of medicines, vaccines, and biosimilar products, as well as technology transfer, public funding, and potential joint projects between the two countries.
Among those who met with the scientific delegation that included Güzel were Saudi Princess Dr. Maha bint Mishari Al Saud; Prof. Bandar Alknawy, President of the Riyadh Global Medical Biotechnology Summit and President of King Saud bin Abdulaziz University; Dr. Adel Alharf, Vice President for the Drug Sector at the Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA); Prof. Ahmet Alaskar, an executive at the King Abdullah International Medical Research Center; and Saudi astronaut and scientist Rayyanah Barnawi.
Meetings with officials from the Saudi Ministry of Health and the SFDA also addressed potential scientific initiatives and investment opportunities in health technologies in line with the goals of Saudi Vision 2030.
MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING SIGNED ON BEHALF OF MEDIPOL
One of the tangible outcomes of the congress was the Memorandum of Understanding signed by Güzel on behalf of Istanbul Medipol University. The memorandum established a new framework for developing scientific and technological cooperation focused on healthcare between Istanbul Medipol University and stakeholders in Saudi Arabia.
