Medipol students awarded second place at SIU 2026 for their location-tracking technology

A study titled "Receiver-Centric TDOA Localization Framework for DAB Signals under Synchronization Impairments" developed by Istanbul Medipol University Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering students Mustafa Furkan Beker and Abdullah Tan, was awarded Second Prize at the SIU 2026 Signal Processing and Communications Applications Conference. The study stands out for its innovative approach to improving positioning accuracy in environments where satellite signals are insufficient, making an original contribution to the field of signal processing.

The research titled "Receiver-Centric TDOA Localization Framework for DAB Signals under Synchronization Impairments" and conducted by Mustafa Furkan Beker and Abdullah Tan together with Lecturer Khaled Walid Elgammal from the Istanbul Medipol University Vocational School and Prof. Mehmet Kemal Özdemir from the School of Engineering and Natural Sciences, received the Second Prize at the SIU 2026 Signal Processing and Communications Applications Conference. The study introduces a new method for use in environments where Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) cannot operate reliably. Using Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB) signals, the researchers proposed a new Time Difference of Arrival (TDOA)-based localization approach that improves positioning accuracy. 
 


The SIU Signal Processing and Communications Applications Conference is one of Türkiye's leading scientific events in the field of signal processing. The conference brings together academics, researchers, and students working on current research in areas such as communication technologies, artificial intelligence, image processing, biomedical applications, and localization systems.

A NEW SOLUTION FOR ENVIRONMENTS WHERE SATELLITE SIGNALS ARE INSUFFICIENT
The research aims to provide more reliable positioning in environments where satellite signals are weakened, such as indoor spaces, dense urban areas with high-rise buildings, or regions affected by signal jamming. The proposed method uses DAB broadcast signals to measure time differences between devices more precisely, reducing errors caused by synchronization mismatches.

IMPROVES POSITIONING ACCURACY AND RELIABILITY
In existing positioning methods, signal multipath effects and synchronization differences between devices can negatively affect measurement accuracy. The method developed by the Medipol University research team seeks to achieve more accurate and reliable results through new computation and filtering techniques that reduce these errors.

In this respect, the study aims to contribute to the development of more reliable positioning technologies, particularly in environments where satellite-based systems cannot be used.

SUCCESSFUL RESULTS IN SIMULATION TESTS
The proposed method was evaluated in simulation environments designed to represent different scenarios. The findings demonstrated that the proposed approach provides higher positioning accuracy than existing methods and delivers more reliable results even under challenging conditions.

CONTRIBUTING TO SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH
The study, which received the Second Prize at the SIU 2026 Signal Processing and Communications Applications Conference, is also significant as an example of the success achieved by collaborative research conducted by undergraduate students and academics on a national scientific platform.

The research, developed by Istanbul Medipol University students and academics, aims to contribute to scientific studies in the fields of wireless communications, signal processing, and next-generation positioning technologies.
