Prof. Ömer Ceran, who has been serving as the President of Istanbul Medipol University since 2020, handed over his duty to Prof. Bahadır Kürşat Güntürk.
Prof. Bahadır Kürşat Güntürk has become the new President of Istanbul Medipol University. Prof. Ömer Ceran, who has been serving as President since 2020, handed over the position to Prof. Bahadır Kürşat Güntürk. President Güntürk began his new position with a handover ceremony held at the President’s Office.
PROF. GÜNTÜRK: OUR FUNDAMENTAL RESPONSIBILITY IS TO TRAIN INDIVIDUALS WHO WILL GUIDE SOCIETY
In his speech, Prof. Bahadır Kürşat Güntürk, who started his duty as President, said: “Since its foundation, Istanbul Medipol University has come a long way in its mission to add value to science, education, and humanity, and it has quickly become a respected higher education institution at national and international levels. I feel a great sense of responsibility in being part of this strong structure and in assuming its academic leadership. We live in an era of rapid scientific and technological advancement, with transformation occurring in almost every field. This transformation places greater responsibilities on universities. Being a pioneer in areas such as research-focused, interdisciplinary collaborations, artificial intelligence, and digital transformation, and not only producing science but also training individuals who guide society are our fundamental responsibilities. I wholeheartedly believe that, with this awareness, we will further enhance our research capacity and the quality of our education with the qualified academic staff and visionary students of Istanbul Medipol University.
PRESIDENT GÜNTÜRK THANKED PROF. CERAN AND PROF. AYDIN
Prof. Güntürk continued as follows: “During my term, I will act with the principles of transparency, participation, and common sense. We will adopt a management approach that focuses on academic excellence, ethical values, and social sensitivity. I have full faith that we will create a stronger university climate together, with an approach that values the contribution of each individual. On this occasion, I would like to thank our President Prof. Ömer Ceran, whom I have taken over from, and our Founding President Prof. Sabahattin Aydın for their valuable contributions to our university. With the support of the Medipol Family, I believe that we will achieve significant success on this path that we will walk together.”
PRESIDENT CERAN: I HAVE WITNESSED ALL THE PROCESSES FROM THE ESTABLISHMENT OF ISTANBUL MEDIPOL UNIVERSITY TO THE PRESENT DAY
Prof. Ömer Ceran, who handed over his duty to Prof. Bahadır Kürşat Güntürk, said: “Since the establishment of Istanbul Medipol University in 2010, I have had the honour and responsibility of taking on duties at various levels. I have personally witnessed the development of this large institutional structure from its inception to its current maturity, having assumed the roles of General Secretary, Vice-President, and Acting President since the early years of our university. Istanbul Medipol University, which was planted like a seed during its establishment, has today become one of the largest and most dynamic foundation universities in our country. While we have grown and matured over time, consolidating the foundations laid in its early years, in recent years we have adopted a quality-oriented approach to further develop our vision.”
“WE RECEIVED FULL ACCREDITATION FOR FIVE YEARS”
Prof. Ceran continued as follows: “As we made progress in our rankings and research performance, we aimed to continuously improve the quality of our education. We encouraged our undergraduate programs to seek accreditation at the national and international levels. As of today, 40 of our 74 undergraduate programs have been accredited, and a significant portion of them have advanced to their second accreditation cycle. This understanding of quality is also reflected in our vocational schools. Within this scope, 7 of our vocational school programs have successfully completed the accreditation process. In order to make quality an integral part of our institutional culture, we have carried out work within the framework of the Integrated Quality Management System, not only at the program level but also throughout the entire institutional structure. In addition to our Institutional Quality Commission, we pioneered the institutionalization of quality culture through quality commissions in all academic units and quality representatives in administrative units. We carried out this approach with a management model that prioritized interdisciplinary interaction and teamwork. Our efforts were rewarded when our university received a five-year ‘Full Institutional Accreditation’ from the Turkish Higher Education Quality Council (THEQC).”
“I WILL CONTINUE TO SUPPORT MEDIPOL”
Prof. Ceran concluded his words as follows: “I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to our Founder and the first Chair of the Board of Trustees, Mr. Fahrettin Koca, our Founding President, Prof. Sabahattin Aydın, our current Board of Trustees, all rectorate administrators, academic unit leaders, valuable faculty members, administrative staff, and the devoted teams of our research and development units, who have always made us feel their unconditional support behind these achievements. This success is the result of a visionary, transparent, participatory, and integrated approach to governance. As my term comes to an end, I have full confidence that Istanbul Medipol University will continue to achieve its goals with the same determination. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to all my administrative colleagues who have contributed to my journey and to each and every member of our university. I would like to state that I will continue to support Medipol.”
ABOUT ISTANBUL MEDIPOL UNIVERSITY PRESIDENT PROF. BAHADIR KÜRŞAT GÜNTÜRK
Prof. Bahadır Kürşat Güntürk received his undergraduate degree from the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering of the Faculty of Engineering at İhsan Doğramacı Bilkent University in 1999. Between 1999 and 2003, Prof. Güntürk successfully completed the integrated doctorate program at the Georgia Institute of Technology in the United States. He then worked as an Assistant Professor at Louisiana State University from 2003 to 2009 and as an Associate Professor at the same university between 2009 and 2014.
In 2014, Prof. Güntürk joined the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering of the School of Engineering and Natural Sciences at Istanbul Medipol University as an Associate Professor. He has continued his academic studies at the same university as a Full Professor since 2016. From 2014 to 2024, Prof. Güntürk also fulfilled the role of Head of the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering.
Prof. Güntürk’s research areas include computer vision and artificial intelligence. He has over 80 publications indexed in international databases, and according to Scopus data, his work has received over 3,700 citations; his h-index is 21. Prof. Güntürk has directed 8 national and international projects and advised 17 graduate theses.
President of Istanbul Medipol University Prof. Bahadır Kürşat Güntürk has achieved significant international success by being listed in the top 2% of the “World’s Most Influential Scientists” list prepared in collaboration with Stanford University and Elsevier in 2023 and 2024.
