PROF. ÖMER: THE TRUE MEANING OF THIS COAT LIES IN WHAT YOU BRING TO IT
Delivering the opening address, Prof. Abdülkadir Ömer, Dean of the International School of Medicine, emphasized the significance of the ceremony for students. “Today represents much more than simply taking a step into your second year. It marks the beginning of a lifelong promise to bring healing to others.” Ömer said.

Explaining that the white coat symbolizes diligence, dedication, humility, scientific thinking, ethical responsibility, and trust, Ömer stated: “The true meaning of this coat lies not in its fabric or color, but in what you bring to it: your integrity, curiosity, compassion, and open-heartedness.” Emphasizing that knowledge alone is not sufficient to become a good physician, Ömer highlighted the importance of listening attentively to patients. He encouraged students to be honest about what they do not know and never hesitate to ask for help.

“Knowledge is essential to becoming a good physician, but it is not enough. We must listen carefully to our patients. More often than not, they will guide us toward the answers.” he said.

WEAR THE WHITE COAT AS A PROMISE TO SERVE
Noting that technology and artificial intelligence are fundamentally transforming medical practice, Ömer emphasized the enduring importance of the human dimension of medicine. “Yet nothing will ever replace a kind word or a compassionate touch.” he said.

He also encouraged students to take care of their own health, stating, “Only a healthy heart and mind can truly bring healing to others.”

Thanking families for their support, efforts, and sacrifices throughout the students' educational journey, Ömer concluded his address with a message to the future physicians: “As you put on your white coats today, let them remind you every day of humility, dedication, empathy, respect, and the desire to learn. Wear them not as symbols of authority, but as a promise to serve.”
