Medipol will participate in COP31 with 22 projects
Istanbul Medipol University has secured the opportunity to present 22 projects at the Council of Higher Education (YÖK) Pavilion during the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP31), scheduled to take place in Antalya from November 9 to 20, 2026. The University will also showcase its research on combating climate change and advancing sustainable development to international participants in the conference's Green Zone.

Istanbul Medipol University is preparing to participate in COP31, hosted by Türkiye, with academic research spanning multiple disciplines. Bringing together world leaders, scientists, international organizations, and civil society representatives, the conference will address climate change mitigation, emission reduction targets, climate finance, and sustainable development policies. The application process for Medipol's 22 projects accepted for the YÖK Pavilion was coordinated by the Sustainable Development and Twin Transformation Application and Research Center (SURKAM).
FROM CLIMATE CHANGE TO HEALTH TECHNOLOGIES
Academics from various disciplines, including health sciences, engineering, social sciences, communication, and management sciences, contributed to the University's preparations for COP31. The scope of academic participation encompasses research areas such as greenhouse gas emission modeling, energy and environmental policies, environmental toxicology, cell-based biosensors, next-generation communication technologies, and digital transformation.
The social dimensions of sustainability are also represented through research on international trade, nutrition, healthcare management, migration, and human rights. Academics submitted requests to participate in panels, workshops, expert sessions, side events, and exhibitions according to their respective areas of expertise.
MEDIPOL TO PARTICIPATE IN THE GREEN ZONE
In addition to presenting projects at the YÖK Pavilion, Medipol will also participate in the Green Zone of COP31. Unlike the Blue Zone, where official climate negotiations take place, the Green Zone is designed as an inclusive platform bringing together universities, technology startups, private-sector organizations, civil society groups, and young people.
According to information published on the official COP31 website, the Green Zone will host climate innovation exhibitions, workshops, panel discussions, cultural activities, and international collaboration meetings. This platform will enable scientific research and innovative solutions to be shared not only with specialists but also with broader segments of society.
APPLICATION PROCESS COORDINATED BY SURKAM
The coordination of project applications for COP31 was undertaken by SURKAM under the leadership of its Director, Prof. Rana Atabay Kuşçu. Conducting research in international trade, sustainability, and twin transformation, SURKAM played a central role in bringing together applications submitted by different schools and research units across the University.
With contributions from various academic units, particularly the Research Institute for Health Sciences and Technologies (SABİTA), Medipol aims to bring its scientific expertise on the environmental, technological, and social dimensions of climate change to COP31.
Scheduled to take place at the Antalya Expo Center from November 9 to 20, COP31 will host international negotiations aimed at advancing the objectives of the Paris Agreement. Medipol's participation in the conference is expected to increase the international visibility of its research and create opportunities for new academic collaborations.
