Healing Through Colors: Art from a pharmacist’s palette
Istanbul Medipol University School of Pharmacy brought together 37 abstract works by pharmacist Uğur Atalay in an exhibition titled “Healing Through Colors,” showcasing his transformation of discarded materials into art. Created on surfaces including leather, burlap, and glass fragments, the works offer an artistic perspective on recycling while reflecting Atalay’s connection between his profession and the healing power of art.
Organized by the Istanbul Medipol University School of Pharmacy, the exhibition “Healing Through Colors” draws attention to the creative reuse of discarded materials through art. Open to visitors on the second floor of the South Campus, the exhibition features 37 abstract works by Uğur Atalay, a pharmacist with 44 years of professional experience who has been painting for nearly four decades. Spanning from the 1990s to the present day, Atalay’s works were created using oil paints on unconventional surfaces such as discarded leather, burlap, and glass. The exhibition demonstrates how materials that have outlived their original purpose can be transformed into forms of artistic expression.
ATALAY: WE CAN HEAL PEOPLE THROUGH ART, JUST AS WE DO THROUGH MEDICINE
Speaking about the exhibition, pharmacist Uğur Atalay emphasized the relationship between his profession and art.
“Pharmacy is a profession centered on helping people heal through medicine. But there is also healing through colors. I see this as an extension of our profession. I believe in the healing power of art. What makes these paintings distinctive is that most of them are oil paintings created on leather. That is their defining characteristic.” he said.
Atalay explained that he has been painting for approximately 40 years and has focused on leather over the past decade because of its ability to absorb oil paint particularly well.
“These are oil paintings created on discarded pieces of leather, burlap, and glass, as well as treated leather. All the sketches are my own. I work in an abstract style. There are 37 paintings in the exhibition, and every one of them is my work. Some date back to the years between 1990 and 1995.” he said.

PROF. OMURTAG: BRINGING SCIENCE AND ART TOGETHER ENHANCES MOTIVATION
Speaking at the exhibition opening, Prof. Gülden Zehra Omurtag, Dean of Istanbul Medipol University School of Pharmacy, said she had followed the artistic work of Atalay, her longtime colleague, with great interest.
“I would occasionally see the paintings of my fellow scientist and pharmacist Uğur Atalay, who has been my colleague since 1977, at his pharmacy, and I would watch him create them. He has also approached these paintings as a recycling project. By painting discarded leather with oils, designing his sketches, and applying them to the surfaces, he has created a magnificent exhibition. Bringing science and art together is always motivating. As our motivation increases, our students’ motivation grows alongside it.” Omurtag said.
Expressing her pleasure at the opening of the exhibition, Omurtag continued:
“I hope that seeing a colleague exhibit work in a different field will set a wonderful example for our fellow pharmacists. Our colleague also embarked on this project with the intention of broadening perspectives. This initiative will continue. We will have beautiful paintings created by our academic staff exhibited at our University.”
