Istanbul Medipol University continued its work within the scope of the “Zero Waste Project” without slowing down throughout 2024. The university has undertaken many successful projects with the aim of contributing both on campus and to society. These projects have made significant contributions to sustainability with environmental impacts such as recycling activities, energy saving and prevention of greenhouse gas emissions. Within the scope of the “Lend an Ear” project carried out throughout 2024, 1,240 kg of vegetable waste oil was collected, and 593 kg of blue caps were recycled with the “Every Cap is a Hope” project. In addition, thanks to the “Old Fabrics, New Lives” project, 4,000 kg of textile waste was recycled. In the rainwater harvesting study launched with the slogan “Show Loyalty to Water, Don’t Say Goodbye”, a total of 15,926 liters of water were harvested; a great contribution was made to the efficient use of water. Another important step that reinforced the university’s environmentally friendly approach was the recycling of 700 kg of electronic waste with the “Don’t Throw Away, Recycle or Donate” project. In addition, with the slogan “Don’t Let the Ecological Environment Be Degraded, Don’t Let Natural Life Be Destroyed”, 1,308 kg of waste batteries were prevented from mixing with nature.

28 THOUSAND KG OF GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS WERE PREVENTED
These recycling efforts carried out throughout 2024 not only recovered waste, but also significantly reduced environmental impacts. By recycling 158,250 kg of paper waste, 2,690 trees were prevented from being cut down; a great contribution was made to the protection of natural life and the strengthening of forest ecosystems. The recycling of plastic, glass, and metal waste also increased the benefits provided to the environment. 14,071 kg of plastic waste was recycled, 229.36 barrels of oil were saved, 9,160 kg of glass waste was recycled, and 10.99 tons of raw material was saved. 12,586 kg of metal waste was recycled, saving 16.36 tons of raw materials. Thanks to these efforts, 28,010.25 kg of greenhouse gas emissions were prevented, and 648,825 kWh of energy was saved. At the same time, the work prevented 576.91 kg of greenhouse gas emissions, saved 384.72 kWh of energy, and minimized environmental impacts by preventing 1,195.67 kg of greenhouse gas emissions.
