Assoc. Prof. Tanrıkulu: Social media can be a catalyst for chaos

Assoc. Prof. Faik Tanrıkulu, a faculty member of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences at Istanbul Medipol University, made statements to Anadolu Agency regarding the impartiality of social media platforms. Emphasizing that social media platforms bring an important innovation in terms of increasing individuals’ participation in democracy and allowing them to question current administrations, Assoc. Prof. Tanrıkulu underlined that social media can be both a driving force for social transformations and a catalyst for chaos. Noting that there is a constant tension between the independence of platforms and states’ demands for national security and sovereignty, Assoc. Prof. Tanrıkulu said that the US’s stance on TikTok is one of the most striking examples of this tension.
