History (Englısh)
A New Approach to History Education
The Department of History at Istanbul Medipol University addresses history not merely as a discipline narrating past events, but as a dynamic mode of thinking that connects knowledge with the present and shapes the future. Our goal is to provide our students with the competence to read and analyze historical sources in their original languages, evaluate different periods comparably, and conduct historical analysis at both micro and macro levels.
History education at our university will be conducted through an interdisciplinary approach. With the contributions of expert academicians in the social, economic, and political sciences, as well as philosophy, literature, and the arts, students are expected to acquire the skill to evaluate historical phenomena from diverse perspectives, establishing meaningful connections between the past, present, and future.
Furthermore, students are encouraged to participate in double major and minor programs to enrich their academic development. The engagement established with different disciplines throughout this process enables students not only to gain intellectual flexibility but also to develop contemporary skills such as digital literacy, data-driven thinking, and AI-based historical analysis. Consequently, our graduates achieve a strong position in both academic and professional spheres.
100% English Education and International Experience
The language of instruction in our department is 100% English. Students who achieve advanced proficiency in academic English during the preparatory class complete their academic education in History through courses conducted entirely in English. Every student will have the opportunity to attend courses at elite universities in the United Kingdom or the United States as part of the summer school programs supported by Medipol University. Tuition fees and accommodation expenses for overseas programs are covered by our university.
Arabic Language Education
Knowledge of the Arabic language is of great importance for accessing Ottoman and Islamic historical sources. Students will receive Arabic language courses from faculty experts over three years (six semesters). Students who successfully complete this program will consolidate their language skills by attending an intensive language course in Arabic-speaking countries (such as Jordan, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia). All expenses for this process will likewise be covered by our university.
Ottoman Turkish and Source Reading Competence
Ottoman Turkish, an indispensable tool for Ottoman history research, is a core component of the department's curriculum. Within two years, students will reach a level enabling them to read both printed works and manuscripts. Additionally, in advanced courses, they will begin drafting original research papers based on primary Ottoman sources.
Education Amid the Historical Layers of Istanbul
Leveraging the advantage of being situated in Istanbul—a city that has played host to numerous civilizations from the Roman Empire to the present—the Department of History at Medipol University utilizes this city's rich historical background as an educational environment. Through field trips to archives, libraries, museums, and historical sites organized in connection with course topics, students directly touch history and become active participants in the learning process.

History and Artificial Intelligence (English)
About the Department
Turkey's First
Department of History and Artificial Intelligence
at Istanbul Medipol University
The Department of History and Artificial Intelligence at Istanbul Medipol University proposes a new educational model that brings together the most advanced techniques of historiography with instruction in artificial intelligence technologies.
Our goal is to equip our students with both the fundamental competencies of historiography and literacy and expertise in artificial intelligence, creating a structure in which, depending on their achievement and preferences, they can pursue a double major in History and Artificial Intelligence Engineering. In this way, pioneering graduates will be trained at the new frontiers of historiography.
Educational Approach
In recent years, the processes of producing, processing and circulating historical knowledge have been undergoing a profound transformation thanks to digital technologies and artificial intelligence. The reading, classification and analysis of historical sources, their conversion into data, the production of meaningful results from this data, and their visualization and dissemination are now largely carried out through digital tools. Artificial intelligence, in turn, enables these processes to be carried out in a more systematic, scalable and powerful manner.
The Department of History and Artificial Intelligence at Istanbul Medipol University adopts an approach that places the methodological rigor of the discipline of history at its center. The accurate reading of historical texts, the correct identification of document types and their contexts, the critical questioning of the relationship between sources and the knowledge produced from them, and the construction of reliable historical knowledge on this foundation are the indispensable principles of historiography.
The newly established Department of History and Artificial Intelligence aims not to weaken classical historical methodology, but to strengthen it further with the opportunities offered by artificial intelligence.
One of the program's core objectives is to train researchers capable of connecting the rich historical heritage of Turkey—and of Ottoman history in particular—to the major questions posed by global historiography.
When knowledge produced on the basis of primary sources in Turkish historiography is processed with sound methods and critical tools, it can serve as a powerful laboratory contributing to humanity's shared historical problems. AI-assisted digital methods, in turn, make it possible for this historical material to be analyzed at larger scales and to enter into global academic circulation.
On the other hand, the use of rapidly developing digital methods and AI-based systems in the production of historical knowledge also carries certain risks.
Our department will play an important role in identifying and remedying the aspects of current artificial intelligence workflows that are incompatible with historical methodology, thereby building a foundation that allows the integration of the discipline of history with digital developments to take place under expert oversight.
Our program aims to train students not merely as users of artificial intelligence tools, but as researchers who grasp the epistemological assumptions, modes of reasoning and methodological limits underlying these technologies.
We want our students to gain the ability to use artificial intelligence in the reading, interpretation, conversion into data and visualization of historical material, as well as the ability to develop the relevant technologies themselves.
In line with these goals, we offer our students the opportunity—and encourage them—to pursue a double major or minor with the Department of Artificial Intelligence Engineering.
Within this framework, the undergraduate program in History and Artificial Intelligence aims to offer a distinctive educational model at the international level, one that integrates historical methodology with contemporary artificial intelligence approaches.
We believe that the program will train qualified human resources not only for academic research but also for the fields of cultural heritage, digital archives, data analysis and public history.
Vision
Training a
New Generation of
Historians
Our goal, as the Department of History and Artificial Intelligence at Istanbul Medipol University, is to preserve the classical craft of historiography while training a new generation of historians who rethink it through artificial intelligence technologies, who produce reliable knowledge, who can use artificial intelligence systems critically and, where necessary, contribute to the design of these systems, and who command the expanding frontiers of historiography.
Artificial Intelligence and Historiography
Our answer is clear: No.
History will never be a field of knowledge that can be produced by artificial intelligence independently of human beings.
Historiography is not merely the collection of information. Locating sources, assessing their authenticity, conducting source criticism, comparing different testimonies, questioning reliability, developing meaningful research questions, and producing convincing historical explanations from all of this constitute the very essence of historiography.
These are not merely technical processes, but ones that require intellectual and ethical judgment as well.
However, this does not mean that the role of artificial intelligence in historical research is limited. On the contrary, a new era is opening up for historiography.
Unlike artificial intelligence models offered for general public use, reliable AI systems to be used in scientific knowledge production will be built not on information found on the internet, but on scientific data architectures created by domain experts.
Only historians can create data sets whose source value has been determined, whose authenticity has been assessed, which have undergone source criticism, which represent different points of view, and which preserve their historical context.
General-purpose artificial intelligence systems can produce answers to questions. But the answers to questions such as which sources carry representative power, how concepts have changed meaning over time, or which silences carry historical significance lie within the methodology of history.
Incorporating these into artificial intelligence algorithms can only happen with the contribution of those who know the craft of historiography.
If we fail to train historians who can critically evaluate artificial intelligence systems and contribute to their design, then history may begin to be written by machines.
Artificial intelligence offers historiography opportunities that were not previously possible.
The joint analysis of millions of pages of text, transcription, information extraction, data cleaning, classification, the construction of relationship networks, mapping, visualization, and the analysis of very large data sets are now becoming possible.
In this way, historians will be able to devote their time less to routine tasks and more to interpretation, comparison, critical thinking and the development of new research questions.
Our goal is not to replace historiography with artificial intelligence.
Our goal is to bring historical methodology to the center of the age of artificial intelligence.

Philosophy and Artificial Intelligence (English)
About the Department
Turkey's First
Undergraduate Program in Philosophy and Artificial Intelligence
at Istanbul Medipol University
Istanbul Medipol University's Department of Philosophy and Artificial Intelligence offers a new educational model that keeps in touch with philosophy's age-old questions while attending to the technical details of artificial intelligence, bringing together debates situated at the boundary between philosophy and the sciences.
Our goal is to equip our students with both the fundamental competencies of philosophy and expertise in developing and applying artificial intelligence algorithms, and to train pioneering graduates at the new frontiers of philosophy.
Our aim is to give students the opportunity to focus on philosophy's age-old questions, so that the philosophical knowledge they gain enables them to identify distinctive and original questions and problems at the intersection with engineering, and to approach and analyze these from different perspectives.
Educational Approach
Istanbul Medipol University's Department of Philosophy and Artificial Intelligence adopts an approach that places the methodological rigor of the discipline of philosophy at its center, while also taking into account how the last fifty years of digital developments have affected the field.
Reading philosophy's foundational texts, analyzing concepts, clarifying thought, and building philosophical knowledge upon this foundation are indispensable.
The newly established Department of Philosophy and Artificial Intelligence aims to build the boundary problems that lie between philosophy and the sciences using the opportunities offered by artificial intelligence, and to further strengthen the relationship between them.
Istanbul Medipol University's Department of Philosophy and Artificial Intelligence aims for a dynamic educational approach that envisions developing a perspective that addresses, together and in their mutual interaction, the development of thought throughout human history, the transformation of concepts, and the effort to model human thought using contemporary algorithms.
On the other hand, the rapidly developing digital methods and artificial-intelligence-based systems also carry certain risks in the production of philosophical concepts.
Our department will play an important role in identifying and resolving the aspects of artificial intelligence's current working principles that do not align with the methodology of philosophy.
The aim is to build a foundation that will enable the integration of the nature of thought with digital developments to take place under expert oversight.
Our program aims to train students not merely as users of artificial intelligence tools, but as researchers who grasp the epistemological assumptions, modes of reasoning, and methodological limits behind these technologies.
The core teaching of the Philosophy and Artificial Intelligence program will be conducted at our university in an intertwined, interdisciplinary manner.
With contributions from expert academics in fields such as Philosophy, Engineering, Medicine, Law, Sociology and History, students are expected to receive an education in which they gain the ability to evaluate the age-old questions of thought from different perspectives, and to build meaningful connections between the past, the present and the future through this skill.
Within this framework, the Philosophy and Artificial Intelligence Undergraduate Program aims to offer a distinctive educational model at the international level that integrates the methodology of philosophy with contemporary approaches to artificial intelligence.
Vision
Istanbul Medipol University's
Philosophy and Artificial Intelligence
Vision
As Istanbul Medipol University's Department of Philosophy and Artificial Intelligence, our goal is to train a new generation of philosophers who preserve the classical craft that philosophy has developed and deepened over the centuries, while rethinking it through the possibilities offered by artificial intelligence algorithms; who produce reliable knowledge; who can use artificial intelligence systems with expert rigor and, when necessary, contribute to the design of these systems; and who command the expanding frontiers of thought.
Artificial Intelligence and Philosophy
Do we even need to say our answer? Certainly not.
Since philosophy rests upon the act of thinking, it will never be a capacity that can be encompassed by artificial intelligence independently of the human being.
Philosophy is not merely about discussing certain works or superficial modes of thought and gathering information. Reading sources closely, evaluating the coherence of arguments, engaging in conceptual critique, comparing different modes of thought, developing research questions in relation to age-old problems, and producing persuasive philosophical conclusions from all of this form the essence of the craft of philosophy.
These are processes that require not only technical skill but also intellectual and ethical judgment.
However, none of this means that the role of artificial intelligence in philosophical research is limited. On the contrary, a new era is opening up for philosophy.
Unlike artificial intelligence models made available for general use, reliable AI systems intended for scientific knowledge production will be built not on information found on the internet, but on scientific data architectures constructed by domain experts.
Only philosophers can construct bodies of information whose source value has been determined, whose content has been assessed, which have undergone source criticism, which represent different points of view, and which preserve their context within the history of thought.
General-purpose artificial intelligence systems can produce answers. However, the answers to questions such as which sources carry representative power, how concepts have changed in meaning over time, or which silences carry meaning for thought, lie within the methodology of philosophy.
Incorporating these into artificial intelligence algorithms can only be achieved with the contribution of those who know the craft of philosophy.
If we fail to train philosophers who can critically evaluate artificial intelligence systems and contribute to their design, then, in a manner that is entirely undesirable, machines may begin to do philosophy.
Artificial intelligence offers the social sciences possibilities that were not previously available.
It is now possible to jointly analyze millions of pages of text, prepare concept maps, build knowledge sets, carry out data cleaning, perform classification, construct relationship networks, undertake mapping and visualization, and analyze extremely large data sets.
In this way, philosophers will be able to devote their time less to routine tasks and more to interpretation, comparison, critical thinking and the development of new research questions.
The aim of the Department of Philosophy and Artificial Intelligence is not to replace philosophy with artificial intelligence.
Our goal is to bring the approach of producing the age-old concepts belonging to modes of thought to the center of the age of artificial intelligence.
International Education
100% English-Medium Education and International Experience
The language of instruction in our department is 100% English.

Study-abroad tuition fees and accommodation expenses are covered by our university.
Classical Language(s) Education and Study-Abroad Language Support Program
Ancient Greek, Latin and Arabic — the languages in which philosophy's foundational texts were written — are of great importance.
Over the course of three years and six semesters, students will take Ancient Greek, Latin and Arabic courses from expert instructors in the field, each lasting at least two semesters.
Students who successfully complete this program will reinforce their language skills by attending an intensive language course delivered by a qualified language provider.
All expenses for this process will be covered by our university.
