Aims and Duties
To conduct national and international scientific research in the field of sports law and to prepare academic studies, reports, policy recommendations, and expert legal opinions that contribute to the development of sports law;
To establish and develop a sustainable platform for cooperation between the University and sports federations, sports clubs, athletes, coaches, agents, sports administrators, public institutions, local authorities, international sports organizations, the private sector, and civil society organizations;
To examine the legal infrastructure of the sports sector with regard to the organization, governance, financing, economic structure, and dispute resolution mechanisms of sport; to assess existing legal regulations and practices; and to develop legal recommendations for addressing contemporary challenges in the field of sport;
To conduct research on the rights and obligations of athletes, athlete contracts, transfer relations, representation and sports agency activities, sponsorship, broadcasting rights, intellectual and industrial property rights, the sports economy, and legal issues arising from the commercialization of sport;
To conduct studies in the fields of sports disciplinary law, sports arbitration, the resolution of sports-related disputes, and national and international sports adjudication; and to examine and comparatively evaluate the decisions of sports arbitration bodies in Türkiye and other countries, as well as those of international sports adjudicatory bodies;
To conduct interdisciplinary research at the intersection of sports law with criminal law, administrative law, private law, labour law, competition law, human rights law, public law, and international law;
To conduct legal and institutional research and develop solutions concerning the prevention of violence and disorder in sport, the protection of children and young people in sport, sexual and physical abuse, psychological violence, discrimination, harassment, doping, match-fixing and manipulation of sporting competitions, corruption in sport, and other unlawful conduct;
To examine national and international policies and practices concerning safe Sport, safeguarding, athlete welfare, sports ethics, and the institutional responsibility of sports organizations, and to develop legally and institutionally practicable models for Türkiye;
To examine legal issues arising from artificial intelligence, big data, electronic monitoring, biometric data, digital platforms, the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system, wearable technologies, and other emerging technologies in sport; and to investigate the legal implications of sports technologies with regard to personal data protection, privacy, discrimination, liability, and fair trial rights;
To monitor national and international legislation, regulatory instruments, judicial decisions, arbitration awards, and regulations adopted by international sports organizations relevant to sports law, and to share the resulting knowledge and assessments with academic communities, sports organizations, public institutions, and relevant stakeholders;
To conduct national and international comparative law research in emerging and developing areas of sports law, including the examination of legal practices in different legal systems, particularly the regulations and practices of the European Union, the Council of Europe, and international sports organizations;
To organize and support national and international scientific meetings, congresses, conferences, symposia, panels, seminars, workshops, and training programs in the field of sports law, and to participate in and support national and international academic events;
To organize training, certification, and in-service training programs for faculty members, researchers, students, athletes, sports administrators, federation and club personnel, lawyers, and other stakeholders in sports law, and to contribute to the development of knowledge and awareness concerning sports law;
To strengthen the interdisciplinary character of sports law by facilitating cooperation among the University's faculties, departments, and practice and research centers in law, sports sciences, business, communication, health sciences, engineering, and other academic fields, and to conduct joint research, educational, and project activities;
To conduct research, consultancy, scientific assessment, and expert opinion activities on sports law matters required by public institutions, sports federations, sports clubs, sports organizations, international organizations, the private sector, and civil society organizations;
To develop and implement national and international research projects in the field of sports law; to prepare projects for national and international funding and support programs, including TÜBİTAK, the European Union, Erasmus+, and Horizon Europe; and to develop national and international partnerships within this framework;
To prepare and publish books, reports, academic articles, policy papers, bulletins, and other printed, visual, and electronic publications in order to support the production and dissemination of scientific knowledge in the field of sports law;
To establish documentation and information resources for the systematic monitoring of national and international legislation, judicial and arbitration decisions, scientific publications, and other relevant sources in sports law, and to facilitate access to such resources for researchers;
To contribute to the development of national and international academic and professional networks among academics, researchers, legal practitioners, sports administrators, and other experts working in the field of sports law, and to carry out joint research and educational activities;
To develop legal and institutional policy recommendations for public institutions, sports organizations, and other relevant stakeholders concerning the development of sports law, and to contribute to strengthening the legal dimension of sports policies;
To conduct activities aimed at promoting the rule of law, justice, human rights, athletes' rights, ethics, transparency, accountability, good governance, and Safe Sport principles in the field of sport;
To contribute academically and practically to the University's undergraduate and graduate educational programs in the field of sports law and to support students in gaining research and practical experience in sports law;
To cooperate with universities, research centers, sports organizations, legal institutions, and other relevant institutions operating in the field of sports law in Türkiye and abroad, and to carry out joint scientific research, educational programs, and projects;
To organize joint activities with national and international organizations in order to support the development and implementation of sports law, and to carry out other scientific, educational, and practice-oriented activities decided by the Governing Board in line with the objectives of the Center.
