Frequently Asked Questions
The Turkish Preparatory Program aims to provide Turkish language instruction to international students enrolled in programs in which the language of instruction is Turkish or partially Turkish. The program is designed to enable students to develop proficiency in all four language skills and to attain a level of Turkish that allows them to participate actively in undergraduate courses and meet all of their academic needs.
The Turkish Preparatory Program consists of five levels: A1, A2, B1, B2, and C1.
Unless there is a change in the decisions or regulations issued by the Council of Higher Education (YÖK), instruction will be delivered face-to-face.
Students receive Turkish language instruction for the following number of hours at each level:
- A1: 150 hours
- A2: 150 hours
- B1: 175 hours
- B2: 175 hours
- C1: 200 hours
Students are required to apply in person to the Turkish Preparatory Program Coordination Office to complete the necessary procedures. Following the application, students take a placement test. Based on their scores in reading, listening, writing, and speaking, students are placed in the class corresponding to their proficiency level.
Once students have been assigned to their classes, no changes can be made to their class assignments or class schedules.
The start and end dates of the Turkish Preparatory Program are specified in the academic calendar published on the website.
The academic calendar for the 2026–2027 academic year can be accessed via the link below.

Students' grades are calculated according to the following assessment criteria:
- A1 and A2: Midterm Exam (30%), Final Exam (50%), Quiz (20%)
- B1: Midterm Exam (30%), Final Exam (50%), Story Examination (20%)
- B2: Midterm Exam (30%), Final Exam (50%), Story Examination (10%), Presentation (10%)
- C1: Midterm Exam (30%), Final Exam (50%), Story Examination (20%)
At the end of the academic year, the average grade for each level is calculated with a weighting of 25%, taking students' attendance records into consideration, and the final annual average is determined accordingly.
Students' language proficiency is assessed in examinations based on the four fundamental language skills: listening, reading, writing, and speaking. In final examinations, each of these skills is assessed out of 25 points, with the total examination score calculated out of 100 points. This assessment structure aims to measure not only students' grammatical knowledge but also their ability to use Turkish effectively in communicative contexts in a balanced and comprehensive manner.
To be considered successful in the final examination, students must obtain at least 13 points in each of the four language skills and achieve a minimum overall score of 70 points. If either of these requirements is not met, the student is not considered successful and must repeat the level.
To enhance the reliability of the assessment and evaluation process, writing and speaking examinations are independently assessed by two different instructors/lecturers. The arithmetic mean of the scores awarded by the two assessors is calculated to determine the student's final score for the relevant skill.
To be considered successful and advance to the next level, students must obtain at least 13 points in each of the reading, listening, writing, and speaking skills and achieve a total score of 70 points or higher.
Make-up examinations are not offered.
Students may access their examination results through the Announcements section published on our website.
Three examinations are administered at each level.
At the A1 and A2 levels, a quiz is administered as the first assessment, whereas at the B1, B2, and C1 levels, a story examination is administered. Quizzes are designed to reinforce the topics covered in class. Story examinations assess students' vocabulary, reading comprehension, and use of grammar.
A midterm examination is administered at every level. The midterm examination assesses students' listening, reading, and writing skills.
A final examination is administered at the end of each level. The final examination assesses reading, listening, writing, and speaking skills.
A student who fails the examination at the end of a level must repeat the same level. A student who fails the proficiency/waiver examination must continue in the Turkish Preparatory Program.
Proficiency/waiver examinations are administered at the beginning and end of each academic term. Students who obtain at least 13 points in each of the reading, listening, writing, and speaking skills and achieve a total score of 70 points or higher in the proficiency/waiver examination are exempt from Turkish preparatory instruction.

Students are required to attend classes.
Absences should only be taken into consideration in compulsory circumstances, such as:
- Illness
- Official procedures
- Emergency situations
In the event of illness, a valid medical report is accepted and does not count toward the student's absence allowance. The medical report must be submitted to the Turkish Preparatory Program Coordination Office.
The Yeni İstanbul Türkçe and Yedi İklim Türkçe textbooks are used throughout the Turkish Preparatory Program. The textbooks are subject to a fee, and students are responsible for obtaining their own copies.
Students' Turkish language learning outside the classroom is supported through speaking clubs held twice a week after classes, based on students' willingness to participate, as well as story-reading assignments. Students' development is also closely monitored and supported through writing assignments and presentation projects.
In addition, at least two different extracurricular activities or educational trips are organized at each level.
Students may participate by completing the application forms shared by the instructors at the beginning of the academic term.
Students who are not registered in the Turkish Preparatory Program are not permitted to attend Turkish language classes.
