A century later expectations of marriage remain largely unchanged
Prof. Başak Gezmen, Head of the Department of New Media and Communication at Istanbul Medipol University, and Research Assistant Sena Savcı compared marriage advertisements published in 1918 with marriage-oriented social media posts shared in 2025. The study revealed that trust, respectability, and economic circumstances played an important role in the search for a spouse in both periods. While these expectations were expressed through family reputation, occupation, and property ownership in historical advertisements, contemporary social media posts emphasized serious intentions toward marriage, honesty, and financial readiness.
