Associate of School of Medicine Prof. Dr Bahadır Ceylan advised what to do after grocery shopping and during food cleaning to avoid COVID-19.
The coronavirus (COVID-19), which has influenced the world, continues to spread rapidly in our country. To protect ourselves from the virus, we must follow the hygiene rules and take the doctors' warnings into account. At this point, Prof Dr Bahadır Ceylan, an associate of the Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology of School of Medicine of Istanbul Medipol University, gave some critical advice on what to do after grocery shopping and during food cleaning to avoid COVID-19.
“CLEAN THE BOTTLES WITH A DISINFECTANT SUPPLY”
Pointing out that some of the citizen’s questions like, is the virus contaminated when drinking water from bottles, Ceylan said, “COVID-19 reaches the respiratory tract of other people and starts the infection by being carried in the droplets that are mixed in the air most often during the cough of sick people. Sometimes, it can also be transmitted by patients taking their hands to their mouths, noses, and eyes after touching the surfaces contaminated with respiratory droplets. Therefore, when you bring the bottles home, wiping them with disinfectant can prevent contamination. ”
"FRUITS AND VEGETABLES MUST BE WASHED COMPLETELY BEFORE CONSUMPTION"
Ceylan also mentioned what should be considered after shopping, he said that if the market employees are infected, they will contaminate both the shopping bag and the products inside. Ceylan, who recommends throwing the bags out if the respiratory problem is observed in the employees and continued: “There is no need to disinfect everything we buy from the market. If the salesman/woman has upper or lower respiratory tract problems, we can wipe the surfaces of the packages with disinfectant. The virus is not contaminated with raw vegetables and fruits from the gastrointestinal tract. But if these foods are contaminated by an infected person and if we touch our mouth, nose, and eyes with our hands, we can get the virus. Therefore, raw products should be washed well in plenty of water before consumption.”
