Profile: Dr. Burak Yulug is Associate Professor of Neurology in Istanbul Medipol University. He is a Stroke neurologist. After finishing his residency training in Turkey and Germany at many University Clinics, he has worked as a scientist in many Brain Research Centers in Germany and Switzerland. His main interest is Neuroregeneration and Neurodegeneration Research. Dr. Yulug has published more than 30 papers in SCI journals as the first author. He has also contributed to many  international book chapters.

Background:

Despite the fact that 15 million people suffer strokes in the world every year, the underlying causes of stroke is not entirely understood. Dr. Yulug’s research and laboratory are focused on understanding the pathophysiology of stroke (i.e., ischemic and hemorrhagic) and traumatic brain injury. We are aiming to develop new neuroprotective treatment strategies including to boost the endogenous repair mechanisms after ischemic and traumatic brain injury. We are especially focused on the neuroprotective effect of rTMS (repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation) and FUS (focused ultrasound) combined with candidate neuroprotective drugs after different brain injury models.

Methods:

In vitro and in vivo cerebral ischemia models: oxygen glucose deprivation, brain slices, thread (filament) model of focal cerebral ischemia  (mouse, rat); global cerebral ischemia (rat).

Traumatic brain injury model: Cold injury (mouse)

rTMS (repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation) and FUS (focused ultrasound) in

focal cerebral ischemia (mouse, rat); global cerebral ischemia (rat), Cold injury

(mouse) and Laser Axotomy.
